Who offers fast WordPress hosting packages from a speed point of view?
I’ve been around the block more than a few times on WordPress builds, with a blog that turned into several iterations of what is now a very well known UK agency brand, a Woocommerce based Motorsport retailer, and of course this site which is on Automattic’s hosted WordPress. The common element in each of my projects success – the speed and security of the hosting provider.
The thing that affects the speed of your WordPress website is (more often than not) linked to the speed of the database and php servers of your hosts. It’s great to have a fast front end (through a CDN and the like), but until the server has responded, your browser will just be a blank page. That server response time can be very laggy on a badly coded WordPress theme, or a slow host or both.
Standard WordPress vs Complex Build with WooCommerce
This site speed issue was particularly obvious with my Woocommerce site. WordPress isn’t really set up for ecommerce and Woocommerce uses the
wp_terms data table for all of the product attributes associated with things like colour, size etc. This is a nightmare for a WordPress database as it has to perform thousands of lookups (in text values – very slow). The outcome, a website that takes 7 seconds to load a single page. That’s not good.
The result of moving a WordPress / WooComerce site to Kinsta: 300ms Page Load Time on Average!

A great all round WordPress host based in the UK. Their team are knowledgeable, friendly and quick to respond. This is the hosting company that my first company started out with. Very secure, very fast and running a well updated PHP / grid hosting cluster.
Pro Host Tip: Choose the “cloud hosting” optimised UK WordPress hosting. The grid cluster hosting is solid as a rock, even in extreme traffic conditions. Get the dedicated IP and SSL certificate if you can.

My golden rule on managed hosting companies: If you’re working with a good company, you should rarely, if ever notice a problem. My other key issue is customer service, if you do need to ask a question, you should get a helpful, sensible response very quickly. That’s true of WPengine who have historically been very good, especially for standard WordPress installations.
WPengine’s strength is in their backups and staging features. It’s very easy to run a professional staging environment with push to live and backup features at your fingertips.
Site speed wise we were achieving a sub 1 second page load time for WooCommerce pages and 500ms page loads for ordinary WordPress blog pages.
WP Engine are probably the most complete service available today, with prices starting at about £20 per month. I recommend the “professional” level service with SSL and the CDN service.

I’m absolutely blown away by the front end page speed performance of this managed WP service. We’re getting sub 500ms page load times from their network, which is based on Google Cloud:
The managed interface is first class and their team offer a migration service which I recommend. The support team are all engineers themselves, so for most queries, they’re absolutely spot on with their support.
