A few weeks ago I acquired a set Sony WH-1000XM3 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones after reading the What Hi-Fi Best noise-cancelling headphones 2019 article.

The headphones fold into a neat little carrying case pictured here:

Sony supply a splitter for a 3.5mm stereo audio jack (if you’re pairing up with a friend) and there’s a short usb-c charging cable provided. Obviously we’re using these things in wireless mode but it’s nice to see a stereo jack cable socket built into the headphones.

Actually using them is a breeze, they paired quickly with my Pixel 2. Sound quality is good, but after enabling the Bluetooth aptX HD codec on my phone; they came alive. Crisp, clear audio with very roomy sounds. Using them with aptX HD isn’t a forthcoming option, though as you have to enable developer mode on the Pixel to get into the settings.

Here’s how:

How to enable aptX HD on the Google Pixel

  1. Go to the ‘Settings’ app in Android by Selecting the gEar Icon in your menu.
  2. Select ‘System’.
  3. Select ‘About Phone’.
  4. Tap ‘Build Number’ 7 times.
  5. Go to Settings again and look for ‘Developer Options’ on the menu.
  6. In ‘Developer Options’ scroll down to “Bluetooth Audio Codec” and select aptX HD.

You can also play with the playback quality and sample rate in these options.

Enabling aptX HD is what makes the Sony WH-1000XM3 Wireless Headphones come alive. In my opinion they’re mid blowing good for sound quality. Recommended!

The noise cancelling is also very, very good. Comparable to the Bose headphones, I tested these walking through Old Street in London. The quietness is eery, and it makes you realise how much we rely on hearing to navigate the outdoors. You have to be so careful crossing the road as anything you haven’t seen is a surprise if it’s headed toward you. Fantastic performance, very delighted with this feature.
